Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday said that the state government has taken all precautionary measures to face the northeast monsoon. He also directed the officials to pay special attention and keep a close watch on waterlogging prone areas in Chennai.
The Chief Minister presided over a review meeting with senior officials at the State Emergency Operations Center at Ezhilagam in Chennai. After meeting reporters, he said, “Heavy rainfall has been recorded in Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and parts of the Nilgiris. There is no danger or risk at present. As the forecast indicates heavy rainfall on October 21 and 22, we have already put precautionary measures in place.”
Mr. Stalin said there was no need to evacuate residents living along river banks or coastal areas to relief camps at present. However, all collectors have been instructed to remain prepared, he added.
According to a press release, the onset of Northeast Monsoon on October 16 brings widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu Between October 16 and the districts recorded an average rainfall of 12 mm.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the damage caused by heavy rains in Tiruvarur, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts through video conferencing and reviewed the precautionary measures put in place. He ordered district administrations to ensure the safety of residents in low-lying areas and along rivers and shift them to relief camps if necessary.
Mr Stalin directed officials to keep relief camps ready with basic facilities such as food, drinking water and medical services. He directed the Tiruvarur district authorities to ensure continuous procurement of paddy bags and speed up transportation of paddy bags procured at direct purchase centers to warehouses. He also reviewed rainfall preparedness in Chennai and directed officials to pay special attention and keep a close eye on waterlogged areas, the report added.
