D. Selvarajan, bishop coadjutor of the Neabean diocese of the Latin Catholic Church, was elected its new bishop.
He replaces Bishop Vincent Samuel, who resigned when he was 75 years old. Pope Leo XIV named D. Selvaraja as the next bishop, the statement said. Earlier this year, he was appointed bishop coadjutor of the diocese.
Dr. Selvarajan was born the second son of Dasan and Muthamma of DM Sadanam, Ottaplavila on 27 January 1962. He completed his theological studies at the Pontifical Seminary in Mangalapuzz. He was ordained a priest on December 23, 1987.
He also holds a postgraduate degree in Sociology from Kerala University. In October 1995, he went to Belgium, where he obtained a licentiate and a doctorate in canon law at the Catholic University of Leuven.
He held important leadership positions in the Diocese of Neyyatinkara. He served as a member of the bishop’s advisory committee, a member of the financial council of the diocese and, since 2018, as a regional episcopal vicar.
Dr. Vincent Samuel resigned after the Pope accepted his request to be allowed to resign after turning 75. He was appointed as the first bishop of Neyyatinkara Diocese on 14 June 1996. He also served as the Chairman of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council Youth Commission, a member of the Indian Catholic Council Youth Movement, Secretary and Vice-Chairman of the Kerala Episcopal Region
