
More than 20,000 students will participate in the Kerala School Sports and Games, which will be held on the lines of the Olympics in the state capital from Tuesday.
General Education Minister V. Sivankutty said at a press conference here on Saturday that the competitions will be held in 41 events at 12 stadiums. NSK Director of General Education (DGE) Umesh will visit the stadiums to review the arrangements.
The Chief Minister’s trophy procession, which started from Kasaragod on October 16, will reach Thiruvananthapuram district limits on Sunday. The Minister and the DGE will receive the trophy at the Government Higher Secondary School, Thattathumale. The trophy parade will be held in major centers in the district on Monday and Tuesday.
On Tuesday, after a reception at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, at 10 a.m., the procession will arrive at the venue of the Games – University Stadium.
On Sunday, the torchlight procession will begin from Ernakulam. After receptions at schools in Alappuzha and Kollam districts, he will reach Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. It will be held at various schools in the city on Tuesday. They would join the trophy parade at Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom.
This time, the overall championship trophy for the best school will be awarded in two categories – elementary school and sports school. However, no distinction will be made between general and sports schools when deciding on the district with the maximum number of points. The total number of points obtained by schools in both categories will be taken into account.
The minister said that the prize money in athletics for the best general school has been increased. The first prize was increased from ₹ 2.25 lakh to ₹ 2.5 lakh, the second from ₹ 1.65 lakh to ₹ 1.75 lakh and the third prize from ₹ 1.1 lakh to ₹ 1.25 lakh.
Sports schools in the athletics category would get ₹1,000, ₹75,000 and ₹50,000 respectively.
As many as 1,944 students would participate in school games as part of inclusive sports.
The games will also feature 35 students, including 12 girls, from seven state-run schools in the Gulf region.
