Karnataka will set up a dedicated data center park at Tavarekere, an industrial area adjacent to Hoskote and Kolar to meet the huge data center infrastructure requirements in the state.
The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has already announced and will soon acquire 1,000 acres of land at Tavarekere (about 46 km from the Bengaluru CBD) and 250 to 300 acres of this land will be used to build dedicated data center infrastructure for individual data centers for businesses, Chairman KaSache, Sharda, GaSache, Sharda, GaSache. he told The Hindu on Wednesday.
Hub-and-spoke model
“This will be a very large scale data center infrastructure in the state in the MW to GW high capacity range. The aim is to create a hub and spoke model with a GW data center connecting several edge data centers in emerging cities in the state,” he said.
The data center park would be ready in 18 to 24 months and the idea was to link GW/hyper scale facilities with smaller 25 to 30 MW multiple such data centers across Mysuru, Hubballi, Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Davanagere to ensure seamless data storage and data security, Mr. Gowda said.
“The data center is a very critical infrastructure for the digital economy. It’s similar to when you have roads, flyovers, ports and channels for connectivity and logistics. They are neural networks that support network connectivity for the state and beyond,” he explained.
Huge demand
Asked who all will be the tenants in the upcoming data center park, Mr. Gowda said there is huge demand for such dedicated data center infrastructure in the state from both domestic and international players. “The ministers of IT and industry are also working on this project,” he informed.
Earlier at the Data Center Summit organized by the India Green Building Council, part of the Confederation of Indian Industry, he said, “Our vision is to make Karnataka a hub for data innovation, extend the lead beyond Bengaluru for regional parity and promote hyperscale and edge data centers across the state.”
Where does Karnataka stand
According to industry experts, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are quite ahead of Karnataka in terms of data center infrastructure. “Karnataka, being a huge data-rich state with all its IT capabilities and knowledge ecosystem, should significantly boost its data storage and management capabilities by setting up huge green data centers,” said an industry observer, who did not wish to be named.
