
Key Delhi-NCR railway stations will no longer provide platform tickets on some days this month. Northern Railway announced on Wednesday 15 October that the sale of platform tickets will be temporarily suspended at 5 railway stations.
Why has Northern Railway temporarily suspended the sale of platform tickets?
Due to the expected festive rush on the occasion of Diwali and Chhath, the Northern Railway has temporarily suspended the sale of platform tickets.
In a post on X, Northern Railway said: “Important information. Platform tickets temporarily closed. For the convenience and safety of passengers during the festive season, platform tickets will remain closed at the following stations from October 15.”
When will platform ticket sales resume?
According to the announcement, ticket sales for the platform will resume on October 28. An official notification issued by Northern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay lists the following stations where ticket sales have been suspended.
- New Delhi,
- Delhi Jn
- Hazrat Nizamuddin
- Anand Vihar Terminal
- Ghaziabad Railway Station
Persons accompanying the elderly, persons with special disabilities, illiterate persons and female passengers must contact the information office for a platform ticket according to the notification. These safety precautions are taken to prevent unforeseen accidents during the holidays.
“Dhanteras” or “Dhantrayodashi” marks the beginning of the festive season. The 5-day Diwali festivities begin and will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18. Kali Puja or Chhoti Diwali will follow. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on October 21, Tuesday. Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Deepawali, on the Pratipada of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. Bhaidooj, which is also known as Yama Dwitiya, marks the last day of Diwali festivities.
Chhath Puja, a major festival observed six days after Diwali on the sixth day of the lunar month of Kartika, will be celebrated on October 25, Saturday. The measures came after a stampede in February 2025 during the Maha Kumbh rush in which at least 18 people were killed at a New Delhi railway station.
