TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee arrived at the CID headquarters in Kolkata on Sunday (June 14, 2026) for the second round of questioning in connection with the alleged forgery of signatures of MLAs for the appointment of Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
According to CID officials, detectives were not satisfied with the answers given by the Diamond Harbor deputy during his questioning last week, so they were subpoenaed again.
The CID has also summoned TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh for questioning on Sunday (June 14, 2026) and there is a possibility that the two leaders will have to sit face to face for questioning, the officer said.
Mr Ghosh is scheduled to appear before CID officers at Bhaban Bhawan around 3pm
“Banerjee has been asked to provide some specific documents in connection with the case,” said a CID officer.
On May 6, TMC legislators met at Mr. Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat and proposed the name of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay for the post of Leader of Opposition. Lawmakers present at the meeting are said to have expressed their support by raising their hands.
However, the formal proposal was not immediately submitted to the Diet. After the TMC MLAs were sworn in on May 13 and 14, the assembly secretariat asked the party for a resolution naming its candidate for the post.
A new meeting was held on May 19, after which a document with the signatures of 70 legislators in support of Mr. Chattopadhyay was presented to the Assembly.
Questions were subsequently raised after discrepancies were allegedly noticed between the signatures on various documents submitted by the TMC MLA.
The matter eventually led to the registration of an FIR and a CID probe. The state probe has already interviewed several lawmakers in connection with the case.
