Health workers, union members protest app-based attendance system

Health workers and union members staged a protest at the Ripon Buildings on Thursday against the implementation of an app-based attendance system, which nurses say has resulted in lost pay at the slightest delay.

AITUC has submitted a petition to Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner GS Sameeran, stating that the employees of the city’s primary health centers in 15 zones are getting salaries for only 10 days.

The union demanded immediate payment of outstanding wages and asked for manual attendance records to be kept alongside the request.

AR Shanthi, secretary of the Medical Association for Social Equality, urged the civic body to fix the software glitches, saying the app failed to take into account different shift timings. She also demanded eight-hour shifts, compensatory time off and paid maternity leave.

N. Beulah John Selvaraj, representing the protesters, presented their demands to the GCC Commissioner, who assured them that the pending salary, including the agreed five-day salary due on June 5, would be credited soon.

“Some got paid”

Nurse Sridevi said on Saturday that of the nearly 1,700 staff at the ward, some had received their payment, while others expected to receive it on Monday.
