The Directorate of the Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday cleared the international syndicate of smuggling gold at Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahara International (CSMI), Mumbai, after the name of the intelligence operation named for the “Operation Golden Sweep”.
This operation led to a total arrest of 13 individuals, including foreign nationals, airport employees and alleged master.
Dri also confiscated 10.488 kg of 24 karatic foreign origin, in the value of approximately approximately £12.58 crore from accused people.
What was their operandi modus?
The investigation revealed that the trans-national syndicate used Mumbai airport as a transit point. The Syndicate employed passengers from transit flying from Dubai to destinations like Singapore, Bangkok and Dhaka through Mumbai, who acted as carriers.
These carriers accepted a highly discreet method of hiding, where their bodies were placed gold hidden wax capsules in the shape of an egg, the official press release said.
The key element of Modus Operandi Syndicate included the use of airport employees. Upon arrival in the bombje, passengers would discreetly handed over to smuggled gold to cooperate with airport employees in the international departure area.
Employees would then illegally remove smuggled gold from the airport premises and delivered it to service doctors and receivers associated with MasterMind.
Who were all arrested?
It was found that the Syndicate is operated by MasterMinds based in Bombai and Dubai, who in turn employed passengers transit, airport employees, service staff and more receivers.
Among those arrested are:
– Two Bangladesh nationals.
– Six Sri Lankan nationals.
-DVA employees of the airport who worked on Meet-and-Red.
– alleged master based in Mumbai.
The agency noted that the case also emphasizes the growing initiated threat in sensitive infrastructure, where organized syndicates try to use transit routes and airport workers for illegal cash gain.
“Dri remains constant in its mission to protect the economic interests of India and national security from threats that represent such multinational criminal syndicates,” the release said.
