The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in its Senate and Syndicate has decided to build a 900-bed hi-tech hospital for clinical practice at its new campus under construction at Ramanagara.

The university has submitted a detailed plan to the state government and is awaiting approval to start work.

“A proposal was submitted to the National Medical Commission (NMC) this year to set up a new government medical college at Ramanagara. This college is a constituent college of the university and it is necessary to have its own teaching hospital. Therefore, a decision was taken to build a 900-bed high-tech hospital in the new RGUHS campus and a master plan was prepared and submitted to the VBCBhagica Govt. RGUHS.

A revitalized project

The construction of the new RGUHS campus near Archakarahalli in Ramanagara is in full swing at a cost of about ₹ 600 crore.

According to the original plan, the campus was to include medical, dental, pharmacy and nursing schools, in addition to 250 super specialty beds and 750 hi-tech hospital beds. However, the government dropped the hi-tech hospital and approved the rest.

Meanwhile, the state government has decided to set up a new government medical college at Ramanagara. The NMC has already submitted a proposal to establish a medical college with the support of the district hospital. However, cardiologist and MP for Bengaluru Rural CN Manjunath objected to the same letter to the Vice-Chancellor, RGUHS, on 14 January 2026. Thereafter, the proposal for a hi-tech hospital was revived, which eventually led to a resolution in the Senate and University Syndicate.

“We need our own hospital”

RGUHS now argues that it needs its own hospital for clinical practice for medical students. “The Ramanagara district hospital has 300 beds and the taluk hospital has 150 beds. Both these hospitals can be combined and a medical college can be set up. However, the 450 beds available in both the hospitals are enough to train only 100 students. Such a small number of beds available will not support the increase in medical seats in the future,” said Dr.

Delay

The RGUHS campus is being constructed on a total area of 216 acres in Ramanagara and has missed the deadline. “Seventy percent of the work is already completed. According to the schedule, the occupancy was to be completed by March-April 2026. However, there has been a slight delay. Therefore, we have asked that the administrative block and the medical block be handed over by November and we will soon shift to Ramanagara,” said Dr. Bhagwan.
