
Continuous rains in the parts of West Bengal have caused confusion and claimed at least 28 lives. Darjeeling remains the worst area, while dozens of people are still missing because rescue teams are trying to achieve remote areas of cut off the flood. Heavy downpours in North Bengal launched landslides and caused the roads to the caves in and leaving several tourists from Calcutta and other parts of the Bengal stuck during the Durga Puja holidays.
Several videos on social media show swollen rivers with strong streams that sweep cars, houses and even rhinos. Visuals from the affected areas reveal damaged bridges, washed roads and rivers in a lot. Strong weather also caused severe damage across the borders in Nepal.

Elephants turn the hero in the middle of chaos
In the middle of the uncertainty, the elephants turned the heroes. Ravikant Jha, an assistant to the guardian of wild animals from Jaldar, explained how the animals help to transport stuck tourists after the wooden bridge collapsed.
“Our elephants brought 2-4 tourists across the river because the bridge near the cottage broke because of the rain, so no one can come on the road. For tourists who want to come, we bring them an elephant – 5-6, and we will try to bring those who want to come here.”
Rescue teams in action
The national strength of the reaction to disasters (NDRF) carried out flood and water rescue operations in affected areas and evacuated over 160 people after heavy rains. According to officials, a total of 105 people were saved by boat, while another 55 were transported or cloudy by means of zip lines in Jalpaiguri. The team also won one deceased individual during operations.
