The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said the coaches on the upcoming blue line, the airport corridor connecting the Central Silk Board intersection with the International KEVEGOWDA (KIA) Airport via Kr Puram, will be equipped with dedicated luggage racks.
The company recognizes the special needs of air passengers and makes design changes to adapt to larger luggage in the metro coaches in this particular line. “Since this line is primarily intended to serve at the airport, we ensure that passengers can conveniently carry their luggage. Each coach will have installed stands installed at a secure and accessible place at both ends to avoid differential during their journey.
Currently, the Metro Bengaluru does not offer a designated luggage space. The rules allow commuting to wear one bag of up to 60 cm x 45 cm × 25 cm and a maximum of 15 kg. Larger or extra bags attract a fee of 30 GBP, while violations can lead to fines up to 250 GBP. The upcoming stands are expected to alleviate these limitations for air -bound passengers, many of which travel with heavy or more bags.
The blue line is one of the most important metro projects in the city under the expansion of the Namma Metro and provides direct connections to the International Airport Bengaluru on the northern outskirts of the city. Corridor 58.19 km will run without problems from the intersection Silk Board in the south to Kia in the north via Kr Puram.
The line was divided into two segments: phase 2a, covering a section of 19.75 km between the central silk plate and KR Puram; and phase 2b, expansion by 38.44 km from Kr Puram to the airport. According to officials, physical progress in the project has reached 52.5% as of June 30, 2025. The completion date is currently scheduled for December 2027.
Commute
Communities who regularly travel to the airport are eagerly awaiting the connection of the metro, which is expected to provide a faster and more reliable alternative to road transport. Loket S., a frequent leaflet from the BTM layout, said: “I was waiting for years to the airport line. The decision to add luggage racks in coaches is very thoughtful. It will benefit thousands of travelers who otherwise fight bags while using public transport.
The Blue Line project has been in the pipe for almost ten years. The detailed report of the project (DPR) for Silk Board – Kr Puram Stretch was prepared in October 2016 and secure cabinet approval in March 2017. DPR for extending the airport was completed in September 2017 and approved by the government in January 2019.
BMRCL revealed that the blue line will introduce trains without a driver equipped with advanced security systems.
