The Telangana government urged the Center to address the significant shortage in supply of urea and ensure adequate allocations for the coming months.

In a letter to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao highlighted the gap between planned and actual supply of urea during April and May 2026 and sought immediate intervention to ensure availability of fertilizers to farmers.

In his letter, the minister said that against the planned allocation of two million metric tonnes (LMT) of urea for April 2026, the state has received only 1.53 LMT, resulting in a shortfall of 0.47 LMT.

The supply situation remained difficult even in May. Against the requirement of two LMTs, only 1.67 LMTs were shipped. This has adversely affected the state’s efforts to build buffer stocks ahead of the peak farming season.

To overcome the situation, the state government has asked the Center to direct fertilizer importers, including NBCL, IPL and KRIBHCO, to make up the April deficit of 0.47 LMT. The government has requested an additional 0.47 LMT of urea over and above the June allocation to compensate for the shortage that occurred in April.

The minister noted that the state’s demand for urea is expected to increase due to increased cultivation of major crops such as paddy, maize and cotton.
