‘Shubman Gill hasn’t really settled in yet’: Former India cricketer sounds alarm over ODI captaincy

India’s Shubman Gill (PTI Photo) Former India opener Aakash Chopra has pointed out that Shubman Gill still has work to do as India’s ODI captain despite enjoying considerable success with the bat. Ahead of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, Chopra reflected on Gill’s record as a leader in the 50-over format, suggesting that the young captain is yet to fully establish himself in the role.India head into the series after registering a commanding victory in the one-off Test match. The ODI leg begins on June 13 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala with Gill once again leading the side.Gill has taken over the ODI captaincy duties from Rohit Sharma, but the results have not gone India’s way so far. Under his leadership, India played six ODIs, winning only two and losing four. The team also suffered a 1–2 defeat in the home series against New Zealand in January 2026.Taking to his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the numbers behind Gill’s start as ODI captain.“Shubman Gill was the captain for six matches and we lost both the series. We won only two matches, one in Australia and one against New Zealand. So Shubman Gill has not really settled down as a captain in this format,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel Aakash Chopra.Despite the disappointing results, Chopra feels that the Afghanistan series presents an ideal opportunity for Gill to turn things around and start building a stronger record as captain.“That’s the big story. You want to change that. You really want him to just stamp his authority even if he doesn’t stop with the bat. As a captain, he has scored as well and will continue to score. With the form he is in, you will be looking at him to score runs,” he continued. While questions about his captaincy record remain, Gill’s performances as a batsman in ODI cricket have been exceptional. Since his debut against New Zealand in 2019, the Punjab batsman has amassed 2,953 runs in 61 matches at an impressive average of 55.72. He is also among an exclusive group of only five Indian players to have scored a double century in ODI cricket, underscoring his status as one of the premier batsmen in the format.
