1. Three AIADMK MLAs resign from their posts, join TVK
Three AIADMK MLAs who were part of the SP Velumani faction resigned from their posts after which Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar accepted their resignation letters.
A few minutes later, Maragatham Kumaravel, MLA for Madurantakam constituency (Chengalpattu district), S. Jayakumar, MLA for Perundurai constituency (Erode district) and P. Sathyabama, MLA for Dharapuram constituency (Tiruppur district) met the Ministry of Public Works at its Tamailagaad chamber in V. Tamattri. Kazhagam (TVK).
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami scoffed at the development, calling it “vulgar politics” and “horse-trading” by the ruling TVK in Tamil Nadu in a statement. In a post on social media, DMK president MK Stalin described it as “horse-trading at horse-speed”.
2. Thoothukudi schoolgirl rape and murder case: Man gets death sentence
A special POCSO court in Thoothukudi sentenced 38-year-old Dharma Muneeswaran of Sayalkudi to death on two counts after convicting him in the case of sexual assault and murder of a 17-year-old schoolgirl in the district two months ago.
The crime took place in Vedanatham village under Kulathur police jurisdiction in March.
3. Road blockade against a TVK official who demanded a bribe of CZK 1,000 per month
Residents, mostly brick kiln workers and their families, blocked the Cuddalore-Chittoor highway in Puthur village of Vellore district against a local functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh per month from the brick kiln operators for running the units without any political interference.
4. Teenage boy murdered near Madurai Meenakshi Temple
A 17-year-old boy, A. Gubendran, was stabbed to death in the early hours of the morning at the Madurai Corporation Shopping Complex in the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple parking lot.
The murder was said to have resulted in a fight with a person over the purchase of bananas from his shop last month.
5. Big fire in oil spill in Manali
A large fire broke out in a private oil spill in Manali. From 11.30 a.m., workers of the Fire and Rescue Service extinguish the fire.
According to sources, the fire broke out near a warehouse where waste oil and lubricating materials were allegedly stored. Several workers present on the premises noticed the fire and immediately evacuated. Officials said the fire intensified as oil cans stored in the warehouse exploded repeatedly, initially making it difficult for personnel to access the site.
6. Reshuffle of IPS: Arun became head of DVAC
The Tamil Nadu government has appointed Additional Director General of Police TS Anbu as the new ADGP, Law and Order, replacing Maheshwar Dayal.
The state government has also appointed former Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun as ADGP, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Chennai. He had to wait mandatorily after the Election Commission of India (ECI) moved him during the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the assembly elections in the state.
7. Couple killed when car plunges into flooded railway underpass
A former Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) manager and his wife drowned after their car got submerged in rainwater stagnant in a railway underpass near Omalur in Salem district in the early hours.
