The unannounced flood was caused by a heavy rain in the Osmansagar River Basin and the Himayatsagar reservoirs. The 738,15 km flood area in Osmansagar is spread over Bulkapur, Shankarpally, Chandippa, Mominpet, Dhobipet, Chandanagar and Ananthagiri. Himayathsagar has a much Vinter basin of 1308 km.
