Petrol, Diesel Prices Today: How expensive is fuel in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other cities Jun 12 | Today’s news
Gasoline and diesel prices remained largely steady on Friday despite soaring energy prices around the world, triggered by the US-Israel war against Iran and the near-closure of a critical waterway – the Strait of Hormuz. Due to rising global oil prices, state-owned retailers have started passing the cost on to consumers to recover some of the massive accumulated losses.
On May 25, oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased the price of both petrol and diesel by more than ₹2.50 per liter which means cumulative ₹From May 15, an increase of 7.5 per liter. For the last 4 years, petrol and diesel prices in India are at their highest level. Over the past two years, fuel prices have remained largely frozen, with the exception of a ₹2 per liter cut in March 2024.
India’s oil and gas supplies were significantly affected by the war, as 40% of oil imports, 65% of natural gas and 90% of LPG supplies came from the Gulf countries. To reduce oil imports and boost the agricultural sector, India has stepped up efforts to blend ethanol into gasoline. Ethanol blending increased to 20 percent in Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025–26 from 1.53 percent in ESY 2014–15.
Mumbai residents can get petrol at discounted prices on June 14
On the occasion of Raj Thackeray’s 58th birthday on June 14, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will provide subsidized petrol to two-wheeler riders, PTI reported. The party has teamed up with 36 petrol stations across the city to offer petrol at discounted prices from 9am on Sunday. However, the MNS-funded offer is only valid in Mumbai.
The Center is restricting bulk purchases of industrial petrol and diesel from retail pumps
On June 11, the government issued a regulation restricting industrial, commercial and institutional users from buying petrol and diesel from retail pumps. These curbs will remain effective for up to 90 days.
According to the official regulation, bulk industrial gasoline and diesel must be purchased at bulk sales points. Due to significant differences in fuel prices at retail pumps and wholesale outlets, an abnormal increase in demand has been recorded in recent days, especially for diesel prices. Wholesale diesel is at a price ₹134.50 per liter in Delhi, but it is worth it at the retail pumps ₹95.20.
The price difference arises as a result of the government’s policy to adjust retail prices to cushion the common man from the spike in fuel prices and prevent “localized shortages and disruption of essential services”.
“In the current situation, it has been observed that abnormal increases in the sale of motor spirit (gasoline) and high-speed diesel (diesel) through retail outlets in certain parts of the country are due to the shift of industrial, commercial and institutional consumers to retail outlets due to the price difference between retail and bulk selling prices,” said a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel Order (temporary regulation of supply through retail outlets) further restricts the sale of diesel at retail outlets to the fuel tanks of vehicles or containers approved by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO), with purchases limited to 200 liters per customer or vehicle per day.
