Mohun Bagan Super Giant, the ruling Indian Super League champion, formally applied for the Asian football confederation (AFC) to move its upcoming AFC Champions League 2 accessories against Iranian SC, scheduled for September 30, referring to security and uncertainty in the participation of several foreign players.
The sailors have already asked for visas and organized travel, but doubts persist whether British and Australian nationals Tom Aldred, Dimitri Petratos, Jamie Maclaren and Jason Cummings will be allowed to enter Iran, given other restrictions on traveling from these countries.
However, Sepahan’s management claimed that all necessary measures were introduced. “The visa was issued to each member of Mohun Bagan Squad, including their foreign players. There is no problem on our part,” said Sepahan manager, stressing that the accessories should continue as planned.
Bagan, who lost 1-2 with AHAL FK in his Opener ACL-2 at the Salt Lake Stadium stadium, explained that he was not refusing to travel, but urged the AFC to address the uncertainty surrounding his foreign players. Not accepting could attract severe sanctions and even endanger the participation of Indian clubs in future editions of ACL 2. The situation is enhanced by back to Mariners’ backward matches, with the second accessories against Al Hussain in Jordan 21st October.
Super Cup attitude
In parallel development, Mohun Bagan wrote in All India Football Federation (AIFF) before the upcoming Super Cup and demanded that the foreign player quota be limited to four positions proposed. Initially, the Federation allowed up to six foreigners to comply with the best home players in National Service.
Bagan, who quoted the notes of President AIFF Kalyan Chaubeye, claimed that a reduction in the number of foreign players in domestic competitions would benefit the national team. East Bengal also reportedly sought the clarity of the rule at the beginning of this month.
The Stage Low Super Cup Group is scheduled to perform practically on Thursday, starting the tournament in Goa 25 October. Odisha FC decided, while the remaining ISL clubs, along with four I-League pages Kashi, Real Kashmir, Gokulam Keral and Rajasthan United-Will. This year’s edition was traditionally held as the last tournament of the season and will start the home calendar, while the winners earn a bed in AFC Champions League 2 for the 2026-27 season.
