Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio unexpectedly became one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 World Cup on opening night after he handed out three red cards in Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca. While Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez grabbed goals for the hosts, social media seemed convinced that the real star of the show was the man with the whistle.

The futuristic-looking communication headset Sampaio contributed to the attention, which quickly drew comparisons to everything from Xbox gaming gear to RoboCop. Within minutes of the kick-off, memes flooded social media and at the end of the match many fans joked that the Brazilian official deserved the Man of the Match award.

The opening game of the expanded 48-team tournament brought plenty of drama South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat with nine men while Mexico ended the game with 10. Sampaio’s decisions, including one after a VAR review, ensured a chaotic and memorable start to the tournament.

WHO IS WILTON SAMPAIO?

Sampaio is one of the most experienced referees in South America and has been a familiar face on the international football circuit for over a decade.

Born in Teresina de Goias, Brazil in 1981, the 44-year-old started in Brazil’s top division in 2009 before quickly establishing a reputation as one of the country’s leading referees. His performances earned him recognition among the outstanding officials in Brasileirao and in 2013 he received a FIFA badge.

Since then, Sampaio has built an impressive international resume. He participated in the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Copa America, FIFA Club World Cup and several World Cup qualifying campaigns.

The Brazilian was also part of the official FIFA squad for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. During the tournament in Qatar, he attracted considerable attention following England’s quarter-final defeat to France, with several players and fans questioning some of his decisions after the match.

Known in Brazil for following a strict disciplinary approach, Sampaio has regularly produced high numbers of cards in both domestic and continental competitions. His reputation for keeping a tight grip on matches was on display again at the World Cup opener in Mexico City.

WHY HAS WILTON SAMPAIO GONE VIRAL?

At first, the reason for Sampaio’s viral moment had nothing to do with red cards.

After the star-studded opening ceremony, which included Shakira and Burna Boy, fans were quick to notice that the referee was wearing a large over-the-ear communication device connected to his microphone system. The equipment gave it a distinctly futuristic look and immediately became the topic of social media.

Many fans compared the setup to a gaming headset, while others joked that Sampaio looked like he stepped straight out of the RoboCop movies. The memes continued throughout the night as the referee repeatedly found himself at the center of the action.

However, the jokes only got louder after the cards started coming out.

Sampaio went on to celebrate one of the most chaotic World Cup openers in recent memory. The Brazilian referee issued three straight red cards during the match, South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole was sent off shortly after half-time, before team-mate Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review for punching Roberto Alvarado in the face. Mexico defender Cesar Montes then became the third player to be given his orders in stoppage time after bringing down Khuliso Mudau.

IS IT THE REDEST CARD IN THE WORLD’S MATCH?

Despite the Mexico versus South Africa drama, they do not hold the World Cup record.

This unwanted distinction still belongs to the infamous “Battle of Nuremberg” during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Portugal’s round of 16 clash against the Netherlands featured four red cards and a remarkable 16 yellow cards, making it one of the most unpleasant matches in the tournament’s history. Portuguese duo Costinha and Deco were sent off, while Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst were shown red cards for the Dutch.

Even so, the Mexico-South Africa opener comfortably ranks among the most chaotic World Cup matches in recent memory.

For Sampaio, it was a night that started with RoboCop jokes and ended with a three-red card performance that ensured his name would be around the world long after the final whistle.
