J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised the issue of statehood with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a meeting in Delhi on Thursday (June 11, 2026).
The National Conference (NC), which is in power in J&K, plans to stage a protest in Delhi on the first day of the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament to push for restoration of statehood for J&K.
In a post on X, Mr Abdullah said he had called on PM Modi in Delhi “to discuss issues of importance to J&K, including the early return of statehood, state of the economy, pace of development and promotion of tourism”.
The J&K CM also congratulated the Prime Minister for completing 12 uninterrupted years in office. An official spokesperson said the J&K chief minister also emphasized the need for continued support from the Indian government “to accelerate economic growth, enhance connectivity, create jobs, expand infrastructure and improve public welfare in Jammu and Kashmir”.
Constitutional struggle
Earlier in the day, NC President Farooq Abdullah while addressing in Srinagar said the party’s constitutional struggle for restoration of statehood and rights will continue.
He said that all political parties of J&K are united on this demand. On the upcoming protest in Delhi, Mr Abdullah said: “NC has no intention of inviting any party. We are going (to Delhi). Those who want to join can come. Unity on statehood is needed at this time.”
He said the J&K Lieutenant Governor, who is a nominee from Delhi, has most of the powers that an elected government should have.
Mr Abdullah said the political situation in J&K “will remain volatile until the commitments made at the time of the region’s accession to India are honoured”.
“J&K joined India on certain conditions. These conditions should be reviewed and honor must be restored,” Mr Abdullah said.
