Transport Minister CP John said that addressing problems related to drinking water, sewage and electricity will be the top priority of the administration in the capital due to rapid population growth and related infrastructure development in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Delivering the keynote address at a felicitation program organized by The Hindu for property buyers of its ‘Home Expo’ held last year, the minister said the city has a population of around 1.5 million, with the northern and southern regions forming its two main growth corridors.

The northern region, comprising Kazhakuttam, has witnessed a significant population boom in recent years, fueled by steady corporate growth and infrastructure development. Although the city center hosts a significant population, the southern region, including Vizhinjam, has a comparatively lower population density. Construction activities, especially housing projects, did not progress at the same pace in the south. However, in recent years there has been a growing preference for the southern region, especially after the commissioning of the Vizhinjam port, the minister said.

“There is a substantial gap between the demand for drinking water and its supply and this problem needs to be addressed. If we have sufficient storage in dams like Peppara, enough water can be supplied to the residents. The immediate priority should therefore be to solve the problems of drinking water along with solving the problems in the sewage system. Although we have built a sewage treatment plant, it is not working at full capacity. Thirdly, Mr. John should be added to the growing demands of substations.

Development with a vision

Commenting on the prospects and opportunities in the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram Mayor VV Rajesh said that the drinking water pipeline laid in the early 1990s has remained largely unchanged despite the city’s exponential growth over the years. “The city is now home to around 800 IT companies and over 80,000 IT professionals alone. However, infrastructure development has not kept pace with the growing demand. Therefore, all future development projects must be undertaken with a vision of the city’s growth in the next 50 years,” he said.

The rally was organized as a token of appreciation for the confidence and participation of buyers. It also provided them with an opportunity to interact with dignitaries from the city, CREDAI members, leading developers and other home buyers. Around 65 families took part in the event and took advantage of the opportunity. Souvenirs sponsored by Style Plus, KTDC, The Leela and Swayamvara Silks were also presented to property buyers at ‘The Hindu Home Expo’ during the event. The event enabled 100 customers to get their dream home.
