Indian and Canadian National Security Advisors (NSAS) and Security Teams were interviewed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in Delhi on Thursday (September 18, 2025), two years after the bilateral ties torn Ottawa’s assertion that Indian government officials were associated with Harjeet activists.
“This is part of the regular bilateral security consultations that occur between the two countries,” said Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs and confirmed the meeting between the NSA. “It was also an opportunity and an opportunity for them to follow the discussions between the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and the (Canadian) Prime Minister (Mark) Carney in Cananasis on the outskirts of the G-7 in Alberta (June this year),” he added.
Change
Sources have told the Hinds that all -day interviews between NSA Ajit Doval and Nathalie Drouin, a Canadian counselor for national security and news, did not focus on the case of Nijjar, which is now in court. Instead, they discussed that they had moved forward on sharing information and cooperation against terrories as well as Indian applications for the issue of a number of Khalistan activists who wanted in India cases.
The Canadian delegation included Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Morrison, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Mike Dueme and higher diplomats from Global Affairs Canada, Canadian Foreign Ministry.
Repair of broken bindings
Significantly, Many Officials on Both Sides of the Table Had Been part of the Stormy Meetings Held in 2023, When Canada Had Claimed It Had Gurudware in June 2023. At The Time, Mr. DUHEME HAD DOUBLED DOWN ON THE ALLEGATIONS, ACCUSING INDIAN DIPLOMS AND STAFFERS OF “CLANDESTINE” AND “Criminal” behavior. Especially the meeting between Mr. Doval and his previous counterpart in Singapore ended fees for trading in both parties and subsequently excluded diplomats for espionage.
The links began to be repaired only at the beginning of this year, after Mr. Carney invited Modi to the G-7 summit and both sides decided to restore their high commissioners and restart business interviews suspended by Canada two years ago. Yet the problem of security about separatist khalistan groups in Canada remains a problem.
Khalistan threats
The interviews in Delhi came the day after the Khalistan group laid the “siege” of the Indian consulate in Vancouver to protest against what she called “espionage and supervision of Indian diplomats” and also targets the Indian High Commissioner in Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, on posters. Mr. Patnaik and the Canadian High Commissioner to India Christopher Cooter took over last week for their missions and are expected to present their credentials in Ottawa and Delhi at the end of this month.
Asked if India has accepted the latest threats with a visiting Canadian delegation, Mr. Jaiswal said that the security of diplomatic missions is the responsibility of the host government.
“Since there is a concern, we will take it with our (counterparts) in Canada to ensure that there is sufficient safety of our diplomatic space,” Jaiswal said. His statement was contrary to previous incidents that India loudly protested against the Canadian government on her failure to comply with security threats and is a sign of a new understanding between the new Delh and the new government in Ottawa, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney for resetting the custody.
Restoring dialogue mechanisms
On Friday, Mr. Morrison also interviewed Minister Mea (East) P. Kumaran to restore all dialogue mechanisms suspended since 2023, including trade, defense and other issues and solutions to the visa caused by reducing diplomatic staff.
“Both sides reaffirmed the importance of binding in India-Canada, anchored in shared democratic values, respecting the rule of law and the determination to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” MEA said.
