
Mehboob Muftti, former main Minister Jammu and Kashmir and Chief of PDP, wrote Minister Amit Shah to see the imprisoned separatist Yasin Malik through a humanitarian lens. Among other accusations was Malik one of the key leaders of JKLF, who in 1989 kidnapped Rubaiya Sayeed, Muftti’s daughter.
“Although I differ with his political ideology, it is not possible to ignore the courage to take him to give up violence and choose the path of political engagement and not violent disagreement,” Mehbooba Mufti said, sharing a letter to his account X.
Malik is currently filed in Tihar prison. The government claims that Yasin Malik, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022, was involved in activities that were a threat to the country’s sovereignty and were closely associated with militance in J&K.
In 1989, Rubaiya Sayeed, the daughter of the then Interior Minister and Father Mehbae Mufti Muftti Mohammad Sayeed, was kidnapped by Separatististinsin Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir when she returned home from the Faculty of Medicine. The kidnappers demanded the release of five imprisoned members of the queue for the liberation of Jammu Kashmir (JKLF) in exchange for the issue of Sayeed.

In 2004, JKLF admitted its role in the kidnapping and the court proceedings. In July 2022, Rubaiya identified Yasin Malik, one of the key leaders of JKLF at that time, as one of her kidnappers.

PDP chief claims that her appeal is not trying to undermine the authority of the judiciary, but calls for a responsible performance of democratic instruments to honor justice and mercy.
“I humbly ask you to start a compassionate and consider the review of Yasin Malika, closing the door to a man who had chosen peace at any time, breaking fragile confidence necessary for a meaningful dialogue,” he says.
11 August National Investigation Agency (NIA) sought the death penalty for a separatist leader in the matter of terrorist financing. The court granted Yasin Malik for four weeks to give his answer and publish the matter on 10 November.
