The Dharwad District unit in Jagatice Lingayat Mahasabha urged Basavanna followers to mention their religion as Lingayat in the religion column during the upcoming socio of economic and educational survey.
On Wednesday, the President of the Dharwad MV Gongadashetti, said all the Lingayats who follow the Basonians should mention their religion as Lingayat on Wednesday, and that all the Lingayata watching Basavans would mention their religion that should be acquired as Lingayat on Wednesday with other Mahasabha.
“And in column 9, they should mention their caste. And if their name is listed in column 10, then they can mention the same thing,” he said.
When answering Mr. Gongadashetti, Mr. Gongadashetti explained that their agitation was not against any religion, parties, organization or any sub -script.
“Akhila Bharat Veerashaiva Mahasabha, who stood up that Verarashaiva and Lingayat were the same, could not get the status of an independent religion for Lingayat. So we fight to gain independent religion under the name Lingayat,” he said.
He also said that Veraashaiva is part of Lingayat, so the movement should also be supported by members of the Veerashaiva community. They (Veerashaiva followers) should remember that never before the government had recognized a religion with double names and should accept this reality and connect with a minority independent religious status movement, he said.
