10 monitoring teams formed to tackle recurring power outages in Chennai: Minister Nirmalkumar

As part of measures to quickly rectify night-time power outages in Chennai and its suburbs due to breakdowns at the distribution level and other reasons, 10 monitoring teams have been formed and 125 patrol vehicles have been deployed for speedy restoration of power supply, Minister for Power Resources and Law R. Nirmalkumar said on Wednesday.

He checked out the vehicles at the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited headquarters in Chennai. In addition to the existing Minnagam centers, 77 Fuse-off Call centers have been set up, the report said.

Monitoring teams will monitor severe power outages in real-time, gather information on widespread outages, track the progress of restoration work and provide consumers with supply restoration updates. The teams also identify areas of recurring errors to ensure permanent solutions.

Mr. Nirmalkumar told reporters that repeated incidents of power outages due to damaged electrical cables and technical glitches were reported. In some places, he said, anti-social elements deliberately removed fuses.

Additional patrol teams and monitoring measures have been put in place to prevent recurrence of such incidents. According to him, all public complaints were dealt with quickly.

He also said that there is no problem related to electricity generation or electricity shortage in the state. Due to the recent decline in wind power generation, there has been a temporary impact in some locations during peak periods. Most of the outages were caused by technical faults in the distribution system, he said.
