Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has promised steps to improve the functioning of Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) and Government General Hospital, Kozhikode by strengthening their infrastructure and creating new jobs.

His Wednesday (June 10, 2026) visits to both hospitals followed. One of the main proposals is to create a Department of Reproductive Medicine at MCH to provide solutions for infertility treatment. Mr. Muraleedharan said more nursing posts would be created in the super specialty block of the Medical College Hospital. A new position of senior resident physician would be created in the radiotherapy department. The interventional radiology department would either get a new faculty member or a new department head.

The Orthopedic Clinic would get another assistant professor position. The intensive care unit for children would be moved to another floor with more facilities. The operating theater for cochlear implant surgery would be renovated. A heart and lung machine would be purchased for cardiac surgery.

Doctors have earlier said that the government owes hundreds of crores of rupees to hospitals in lieu of treatment given to patients under its various insurance schemes. Because of this, the institution was facing a shortage of funds and found it difficult to repay money to distributors of various medical equipment. At the same time, they drew attention to the lack of creation of new medical staff positions.

Mr. Muraleedharan said that local development funds of MLAs from the district would be used to purchase ventilators for various wards. He ordered the authorities to close the water leak in the old building for the wounded and solve the shortage of potable water in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muraleedharan said the Kozhikode Beach General Hospital will also undergo a facelift. At the meeting with the hospital management, he reviewed the steps required for the development of the infrastructure, the deployment of doctors, nurses and other staff and the current state of the equipment. The Minister pointed out that the strengthening of the beach hospital was necessary to reduce the pressure on the teaching medical hospital. The facilities would be developed on par with the Ernakulam Government General Hospital.
