On Thursday in the United States in the US, a number of “terrorist” threats were broadcast through several historically black universities and universities (HBCU) and forced more of them, including Alabama State University.
Alabama State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Southern University and A&M College and Bethune-Cookman University-Vš locked on Thursday, September 12, each of which quoted the potential threats of campuses.
Campus activities, class canceled
Although the locking at the South University was later canceled, all the activities and classes of the campus were canceled over the weekend, the school officials on social media announced.
Meanwhile, Spelman College in Atlanta urged students and employees to avoid campus after a threat focused on the nearby Clark Atlanta University. While the order of the shelter was eventually canceled, both schools strengthened safety as the investigation continued, mentioned the US Today report.
What were the threats
Alabama State University said she received “terrorist threats”, after which she decided to take over the campus operations as a preventive measure, the USA informed.
Meanwhile, Hampton University canceled classes on Thursday and Friday 12th September, referring to potential threats.
“The University of Hampton received a notification of a potential threat and immediately ended all irrelevant activities,” the university said in its statement.
What are HBCUS?
Historically black universities and universities (HBCU) are universities and universities in the United States, which were founded before 1964, focused primarily on the education of African Americans.
The Title III of the 1965 University Education Act officially identified HBCU as the school of higher education, which was accredited and founded before 1964.
In the US there are a total of 107 recognized HBCU according to the Ministry of Labor.
Threats in HBCUS
The latest warnings come in the background of repeated threats focused on HBCU in recent years.
In 2022, several campuses received an anonymous threat of bombs, which in most black institutions forced evacuation and refuge orders. No explosives have never been found and the FBI later identified a juvenile as for most threats.
