FIFA WORLD CUP 2026: FULL REPORT

If you look closely at the home and away jerseys of the Haiti team, you can see the white and red flag of Poland around the waist. First of all, this is not a defect from the kit manufacturers and is actually part of the design. And the presence of the flag in the jersey has a certain historical significance.

WHAT’S THE STORY?

The story goes back to 1802. At that time, Haiti was a French colony and there was a slave rebellion going on as they fought for freedom.

Around 5,000 Polish soldiers were sent by Napoleon to Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) to assist French forces in suppressing a slave rebellion at the time. Many Poles allied themselves with Napoleon in the hope that France would help restore Poland’s independence after the country was partitioned by Prussia, Russia, and Austria.

However, once they arrived in the Caribbean, the soldiers realized that they were being used to crush a freedom movement led by enslaved Africans fighting against colonial rule. A considerable number of Polish troops sympathized with the cause and switched sides, joining the Haitian revolutionaries in their battle against the French.

After Haiti secured independence in 1804, the country’s founding leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines acknowledged the support provided by the Poles. Although the Haitian constitution of 1805 restricted citizenship and land ownership to white foreigners, Dessalines made a special exception for Polish soldiers. About 500 remained in Haiti and became part of the fabric of the nation.

More than 220 years later, Haiti’s kit for their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 52 years appears to include a small Polish flag on the shirt. The design is widely seen as a tribute to the Polish soldiers who stood by the Haitians during their struggle for independence and chose to make Haiti their home.

Interestingly, Poland will not be playing in this year’s World Cup after failing to qualify. Haiti are in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Morocco.
