A towering figure in the film industry, fondly known as Iyakkunar Imayam (Pinnacle among Directors), Bharathiraja has won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards (South), six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and a Nandi Award. More importantly, he was instrumental in introducing several new actors to Tamil cinema. In a signature move, he rechristened many actors with names beginning with the letter ‘R’, gifting the industry with talented performers including Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjith and Rekha. Actors who have become prominent figures in the Tamil industry include Karthik, Pandian, Chandrasekar, Napoleon and Janakaraj.

‘Guess the top if you can’: The day Bharathiraja challenged film critics

Bharathiraja shared a close bond with composer Ilaiyaraaja and his brother Gangai Amaran even before they made it big in the film world. While serving as a health inspector and participating in measles prevention campaigns, he developed a close friendship with Ilaiyaraaja and his brothers. Together they produced theater dramas. Bharathiraja (whose original name was Chinnasami) hailed from present-day Theni district in southern Tamil Nadu and lived with his brothers in Chennai, all of whom took up odd jobs during their early years.

He enlisted in the army, but eventually convinced the authorities to release him from service. Ilaiyaraaja went on to compose music for many of Bharathiraj’s films and delivered a string of memorable hits before they eventually parted ways. Bharathiraja later introduced music director Devendrana in Vedam Puthithu, whose songs and background score bore distinct traces of Ilaiyaraaja’s influence. AR Rahman composed the music for his Kizhakku Seemaiyile.

Bharathiraja also acted in films and was the hero of Kallukkul Eeram. He later played several cameo roles. Bharathiraja mobilized the film fraternity under the banner of the Tamil Forum for Culture and Literature (Tamil Kalai Ilakkiya Panpadu Maiyam) to demand the immediate establishment of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB). In 2018, it also led to protests in Chennai during an IPL match, leading to the police detaining several film personalities.

Bharathiraj’s legacy through his films

His debut film 16 Vayathinile, starring Sridevi, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, broke new ground in Tamil cinema. The film portrayed rural life with remarkable realism, capturing the villagers in all their complexity – flesh and blood, rustic innocence and a lingering undercurrent of villainy. The characters of Mayilu, Chappani and Parattai remain memorable even decades after the film’s release. The music composed by Ilaiyaraaja was a huge success and each song gained immense popularity. “Senthoora Poove”, written by Gangai Amaran, won the National Award for singer S. Janaki.

His second film, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, dealt with strong social themes and succeeded in portraying caste oppression and secondary treatment of women without overtly claiming to be a ‘social film’. This subtle yet compelling approach to storytelling has become a defining feature of Bharathiraj’s cinematography. Radikaa was introduced as the heroine in this film.

Sigappu Rojakkal was Bharathiraj’s survey of his known rural locations. The film explored what was then an unthinkable subject – a psychopathic serial killer driven by extreme misogyny. This film was also equally celebrated for its music composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The songs “Intha Minminikku Kannil Oru Minnal Vanthadhu” and “Ninaivo Oru Paravai” sung by Kamal Haasan and S. Janaki remain popular even after decades. Director Bakkiyaraj, an associate of Bharathiraj, appeared in one scene, while director Manivannan was also among his associates who later emerged as a prominent filmmaker and actor.

In Nizhalgal, he introduced actor Ravi, who later became widely known as “Nizhalgal” Ravi, and also debuted Vairamuthu as a lyricist. “Ithu Oru Pon Maalai Pozhuthu” remained at the top of the charts on Radio Ceylon for over a year, while “Poongathave Thaazh Thiravaai” became another perennial hit. Actor Pandian entered the film world through his Manna Vaasanai.

With films like Tik Tik Tik, Niram Maaratha Pookal, Nizhalgal and Sigappu Rojakkal, Bharathiraja has shown remarkable versatility, venturing beyond the confines of rural drama while maintaining his distinctive narrative.

Vedam Putithu dealt with the deep-rooted caste structure of Tamil society and the hegemony of the Brahmins, even including a scene depicting Sankaracharya’s visit to a village. A love affair between a middle-caste boy and a Brahmin girl formed the core of the narrative. In many ways, it echoed the sentiments of his blockbuster Alaigal Oivathillai, which explored the love affair between a Brahmin boy and a Christian girl. The film was presented by Karthik and Radha.

Muthal Mariyathai offered thespian Sivaji Ganesan a role characterized by immense screen presence with restrained theatrics. Sivaji took the opportunity to add a new dimension to his acting. Ilaiyaraaja’s music for the film is a treatise on folk-inspired tunes. Writer R. Selvaraj stated that the film was based on the love affair between the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anna Snitkin, who was 25 years younger than him.

En Uyir Thozhan was a scathing indictment of Tamil Nadu politics, depicting how the party cadre gets carried away by its leader’s eloquence, rhetoric and sophistry. Bharathiraja introduced Baba as the hero in the film; the actor later suffered a serious accident, was bedridden and died prematurely. The heroine of the film, Rama, was a volleyball player whom Bharathiraja introduced to cinema with this role.

Kadalora Kavithaigal is another tender yet deep love story, depicting the relationship between the gruff fisherman Chinnappadas played by Sathyaraj and the classy teacher Jennifer played by Rekha. Bharathiraja also acted in some of his films. He was the hero in Kallukkul Eeram and played various roles in other films, including stellar performances in recent years in films like Thiruchitrambalam with Dhanush and Nitya Menen.

Bharathiraja also introduced his son Manoj at the Taj Mahal; Manoj tragically overtook him. He is survived by his wife and daughter Janani.
