A massive fire broke out in a multi-storey government building in Kolkata’s Alipore area on Wednesday morning (June 10, 2026), fire officials said.

One person trapped on the top floor of the eight-storey building, which serves as the South 24 Parganas district administration office, was rescued by the fire brigade.

Ten fire units were involved in fighting the blaze, which was reported around 9.50am. Although the fire was largely under control, hot spots remained, officials said.

Firefighters said the fire started on the third floor and spread to the fourth floor, while thick smoke billowed from several floors.

Flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the windows, and loud bangs were heard from inside the structure during the firefighting effort. According to them, parts of air conditioners also fell from the building.

Heavy smoke build-up, caused by the presence of paper and wood materials inside the offices, hampered firefighting efforts. Firefighters initially faced difficulty entering the building via a stairwell and used hose pipes to spray water from the outside before moving into the structure.

“The concentration of the fire was on the third and fourth floors,” a fire official said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, although officials said malfunctioning air conditioning may be one possible cause.

The building houses several ministries of state administration.
