Anthropic India Private Limited (AIPL), an artificial intelligence (AI) company, said it is a separate legal entity distinct from US-based Anthropic PBC.

Submitting documents to support its arguments before the Chief District and Commercial Court in Belagavi on Tuesday (June 9, 2026), AIPL distanced itself from Anthropic PBC.

It was part of the hearing in a trademark infringement case filed by Belagavi-based Anthropic Softwares Private Limited (ASPL).

AIPL chief executive Irina Ghose’s lawyers have submitted documents saying she is a separate legal entity incorporated in India and cannot be invoked in the suit. The company argued that the allegations in the case were directed only against Anthropic PBC and that AIPL had no legal or operational relationship to warrant its inclusion in the proceedings.

The court adjourned the case to July 6.

ASPL filed a lawsuit alleging infringement and disclosure, naming both Anthropic PBC and its Indian subsidiary as parties. While subpoenas were issued to both defendants, procedural constraints delayed service of the subpoena on the US-based entity.

In its opposition, AIPL argued that the plaintiff’s claims sought relief only against Anthropic PBC and that the attempt to join the Indian subsidiary as a party was legally unsustainable. It further dismissed as “baseless and speculative” the allegation that AIPL is engaged in promoting or furthering the commercial interests of Anthropic PBC in India.

The Belagavi-based startup sought an interim injunction on the basis of prior use, claiming that it has been continuously operating in the Indian IT sector since its inception in 2017. It claims that Anthropic PBC, incorporated in California in 2021, entered the market after ASPL’s presence was established, thereby claiming prior rights to the disputed brand identity of Mohaml, ASPL’s founder.
