The European Commission has proposed its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, which also includes Indian entities. Sanctions must be approved by member states before they can be finalized.

The proposed package focuses on energy, crypto and financial services and trade, including fisheries, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said. The sanctions would also ban former Russian fighters from entering the EU.

“Brick by brick, we are collapsing the foundations of the Russian war economy,” said top EU diplomat Kaja Kallas on the X social network.

“The new lists will cover more than 30 designations in drone manufacturing, as well as new export control measures for 50 companies, including entities based in China, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates and India,” Kallas wrote.

This is not the first time that Indian entities have found themselves on the EU’s sanctions list. However, the news comes as Brussels and New Delhi are in the process of implementing a trade deal that was announced in February.

The sanctions add 30 vessels to the existing 632 sanctioned ships in Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” – vessels carrying Russian oil and oil products and circumventing Western sanctions. The package also expands the sanctions to cover an additional 31 Russian banks, 20 banks, cryptocurrency-related entities and oil traders in third countries. It also imposes a ban on the export of equipment used to support drones and metals and alloys used in defense and aerospace.
