Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that direct flights between India and China will be restored during discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Flights will be restarted after more than five years, because India and China focus on the reconstruction of political ties in the middle of growing business uncertainties around the world.
“The agreement has been reached among our special border management representatives.
“The interests of 2.8 billion people in both countries are associated with our cooperation. This will also prepare a way for the well -being of all mankind. We are determined to assess our relations forward on the basis of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity,” he added.
When were direct flights stopped?
Since the beginning of 2020, direct commercial flights have been stopped among the main economies in the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, travelers were obliged to join through regional nodes such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Bangkok, which significantly increases both travel and expenditure.
The decision to restart direct flights between India and China occurs as preliminary signs of improvement in the bilateral relationship between Delhi and Beijing. Relationships reached their lowest point in June 2020 after the deadly border clashes in the Ladakh valley Galwan along the real control line (LAC), resulting in death of 20 Indian soldiers and non -specific number of Chinese troops.
Visiting PM Modi in China
PM Modi announced a plan to continue flights when he met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Summit of the Organization for Cooperation in Shanghai in Tianjin. This is his first visit to China in seven years.
XI and Modi met last year at Kazan during the BRICS Summit and ended a four -year blockage in bilateral relationships caused by military tension in the eastern Ladak.
“Last year, we had very fertile discussions in Kazan, which gave our relationship a positive direction. After relaxing at the border, the atmosphere of peace and stability was created,” PM Modi said.
In addition, expanding wishes for XI for hosting the SCO Summit, PM Modi said: “I congratulate you on the successful Chinese Presidency of SCO. Thank you for inviting you to visit China and our meeting today.”
