Mild tension in Khammam as tribal women clash with forest personnel over ‘pod land’ claims.

Tension prevailed for some time in the forest reserve area of Sattupalli mandal in Khammam district as a group of local tribal women tried to prevent forest officials from detaining two tribal men in connection with the ‘podu land’ issue.

According to reports, the incident took place near Tamaracheruvu in Kakarlapalli beat on Monday late afternoon.

A slight scuffle broke out between local tribal women and forest department staff when the latter allegedly tried to detain two tribal men on charges of damaging trenches dug for plantation purposes in around 10 hectares of forest land.

The enraged tribal people squatted in front of the forest vehicle and vehemently claimed the forest land as their ‘podu land’.

According to forest department sources, the incident took place when the staff reached the spot to thwart an attempt by a group of tribal people to start ‘pod cultivation’ on the forest land of the reserve in ward number 157, terming it as ‘encroachment’ on the forest land.
