The YSRCP accuses the government of neglecting the police

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has accused the Andhra Pradesh coalition government of neglecting the welfare of police officers and failing to keep promises made to them before the elections.

YSRCP Krishna district president and former minister Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani) said at a press conference on Monday that the government did not consider the concerns of police personnel, just as it allegedly failed women, farmers and unemployed youth.

He alleged that payments due for encashment of surrender leave for constables were still pending and alleged that the government had curtailed the benefits available under the scheme. Payments under the leave and traveling allowance (TA) categories were delayed, resulting in substantial arrears, he said. According to Mr. Venkatramaiah, law and order personnel were owed up to ₹72,000 in travel allowances, while APSP and armed reserve constables were losing benefits worth around ₹36,000 a year.

The former minister further alleged that police personnel were pressured to register a minimum number of drunk driving cases every day and were threatened with transfer to the VR section if the targets were not met. He also questioned the status of election promises such as extra leave on personal occasions and the option of working from home for police personnel.

Expressing concern over the continuation of the orderly system, Mr. Venkatramaiah alleged that constables were still being assigned personal duties by senior officers and even retired IPS officers. He demanded that the scheme be abolished immediately and that all assurances given to the police officers be carried out immediately.

He also criticized Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, saying they had failed to address issues related to police welfare.
