West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday (Jun 07, 2026) said the West Bengal government will provide jobs to relatives of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers killed in the 2021 post-election violence.

Addressing an event organized by the BJP in Kolkata’s New Town area, Mr. Adhikari said jobs would be provided to the relatives of 315 deceased BJP workers in June. The Chief Minister also announced a one-time financial assistance of ₹ 5,000 for all affected families from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The BJP lost the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls and BJP workers were subjected to post-election violence. While campaigning for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Mr Adhikari had promised to provide compensation to the families of BJP workers killed in the post-election violence.

Following the 2021 post-election violence, a committee of the National Human Rights Committee said that West Bengal was experiencing “a manifestation of ‘ruler’s law’ instead of ‘rule of law'”.

After the BJP government came to power, the West Bengal government started registering and reopening previous cases related to violence during and after the 2021 assembly elections. The state government opened 458 new investigations, 181 new first information reports (FIRs) were registered and 59 cases were reopened where final reports were submitted.

West Bengal has had a history of electoral violence and even after the 2026 assembly elections, there were reports of post-election violence, though incidents of violence were less. The Trinamool Congress was at the receiving end of the violence.
