Nationalist Congress Party (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar on Sunday (Jun 7) slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to hike gas and fuel prices, saying it was being done gradually to avoid public backlash while constantly eroding household budgets.

Attacking the prime minister, Mr Pawar said: “He (Mr Modi) has assured people that he will keep inflation under control, but that is not happening. The ruling party will have to pay a political price for this at the right time.” Talking to pressmen in Baramati, he said, “The trip started with two rupees, but slowly it just piled up and affected people.”

Mr. Pawar’s statement comes in the wake of a hike in the price of domestic cooking gas by ₹29 per cylinder, the second hike in the last three months. The same development of fuel prices was observed in the last three months.

Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar claimed that the BJP was not concerned with issues affecting the common people as it was when it was in opposition. “During the Congress government, they were raising their voice about the rise in fuel and gas prices, but now they are silent,” he said.
