The reported reluctance of banks to extend loans to beneficiaries of government schemes belonging to minority communities was taken note of during a meeting chaired by Karnataka State Minority Commission Chairman U. Nisar Ahmed in Chamarajanagar.
During a district-level review meeting on the implementation of the Prime Minister’s new 15-point program in Chamarajanagar on Saturday, Mr. Ahmed noted that complaints had been received regarding banks’ reluctance to provide loans to beneficiaries from minority communities.
Seeking details of the number of beneficiaries who have received loans so far, he said complaints were also received that the education loan applications made by students were still pending with the banks. He directed the banks and officials concerned to expedite the disbursement of the loan and submit the details of the beneficiaries to whom the loans were granted.
He further said that all eligible street vendors should receive the loans meant for them.
While government agencies implementing housing programs should ensure that benefits reach eligible beneficiaries on time in urban, semi-urban and rural areas, Mr. Ahmed said officials should meet beneficiaries wherever they are facing problems and take steps to ensure early completion of housing projects.
He directed officials to collect accurate data on the number of children belonging to minority communities studying in angangads and schools. “More attention should be paid to ensuring their enrollment and continued attendance. Since the Right to Education Act is in place, minority children should not be deprived of educational opportunities,” he said, stressing that schools should not face a shortage of teachers.
He directed the officials to ensure that the welfare schemes and benefits available under various ministries are provided to the minority communities effectively and in accordance with the rules.
The commission monitors how effectively various social security programs are reaching minority beneficiaries. Facilities related to housing, education, loans, skill development and other departmental programs should be made available to the eligible minorities within the stipulated time frame, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Shreeroop said that the camps should be organized at the taluk level to improve access to the schemes of the Labor Department.
Wide awareness should be created about the benefits available under various government schemes and officials should strictly implement schemes meant for minority communities, she added.
