India should examine the possibility of “separation” from the United States and diversify its export destinations in response to his tariff policies, said Biswajit Dhar business policy expert.
Professor Dhar, a former prominent professor of social development Council, added the main speech at the Seminar “Trump Tariffs and World Trade: Indian immediate and long -term political possibilities”. The event was organized by Keral Economic Association (Kea) in cooperation with the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation (GIFT) here on Saturday (August 23, 2024).
When exploring the possibility of separation from the US, India should be more involved in other developing countries. “But it needs political thinking. In the government, there is a section that thinks India is no longer a developing country. Now we are obsessed with this (idea) that we are a developed country,” he said.
He stated that US tariff measures effectively represent the end of post -war discourse on development. In fact, US President Donald Trump states that he does not believe in a global economy that works in a way of developing insufficiently developed regions. “Another thing will be the mortality rate for sustainable development goals,” said Professor Dhar.
Prof. Dhar noted that the world was pushed into the age of imperialism in the first quarter of the 21st century, and compared the US to a global hegemon that was looking for honors from poorer countries to become great again.
