Lyle Menendez was released from prison by the California conditional Council, just one day after his younger brother Erik Menendez also rejected his request for release.
Two brothers who were convicted of killing their parents in 1989 will now stay behind bars for at least three years.
Lyle’s released hearing took place on Friday and lasted ten hours. At the end of the meeting, the Board of Directors decided that it was still a risk for public security. The decision is followed by their resistance in May, when both brothers had their life punishments without conditional release for 50 years for life – they are immediately eligible to assess the conditional release.
Why were their release requests rejected?
During the hearing, the Board of Directors focused on violating the past prison of Lyle, in particular its long -term use of illegal mobile phones between 2018 and 2024. Although none of these violations were recent, they were considered serious and undermined its chances of release.
Parole deputy Parole Patrick Reardon confirmed that the Lyle had the phone “almost all the time” in these years.
“It is expected that citizens will follow the rules as to whether this will be motivated,” said Commissioner Julie Garnerová and explained the decision of the board.
Lyle’s prison record is slightly better than Erik, which has the history of involvement in prison gangs, drug smuggling and inappropriate behavior with visitors.
However, the Council concluded that even Lyle’s efforts to support other prisoners and maintaining good behavior have recently been sufficient to justify the conditional release.
Why did the Menendez brothers kill their parents?
In his statement, the Lyle Council spoke emotionally about his family and claimed that he was abused by his father Jose Menendez at the age of six and eight years. He said that abuse later moved to Erika, which he tried to protect. Lyle also confessed to abusing Erik when they were younger and said, “I don’t know why I did it. I think I just tried to release it from me.”
Brothers’ attorneys are now planning a petition of Habeas Corpus in court. He claims that new evidence revealed in the documentary 2023, supports the original defense that the Menendez brothers were victims of long -term sexual abuse by their father.
This proof includes a letter from Erik’s cousin and the testimony of the former member of the boy group Menudo, who also claimed that he was abused by Jose Menendez.
Despite the growing public sympathy and the support of family members over the years over the years, the conditional council concluded that the brothers are not yet suitable for release. They will be entitled to register in three years.
