Rishabh Pant (Image credit: X) NEW DELHI: Afghanistan missed a golden opportunity to dismiss in-form Rishabh Pant on Day 2 of the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. The incident occurred in the 89th over of India’s innings when Azmatullah Omarzai made a loud appeal against Pant. The referee dismissed the appeal, and while Afghanistan briefly discussed the possibility of a review, goalkeeper Afsar Zazai seemed convinced there was no advantage.Afghanistan trusted their keeper’s judgment and chose not to undergo a DRS review. However, records later showed that the decision may have gone in favor of Afghanistan. The UltraEdge revealed a clear spike as the ball missed Pant’s bat before reaching the keeper, suggesting that the edge was indeed there. The missed opportunity proved costly as Pant scored 81 off 121 balls before he was eventually dismissed by Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.Pant looked set for another century but failed to convert his start. Shahidi fooled him with a volleyed delivery as the left-hander charged down the track looking for a big hit. The ball took a slight spin, leading to a poorly timed shot off the bottom of the bat.The ball flew high into the air and Azmatullah Omarzai settled under it to complete a simple catch to end Pant’s entertaining knock.Earlier, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill hit impressive centuries to put India in the lead.Rahul scored a composed 100 off 165 deliveries before Ziaur Rahman Sharifi was run out, while Gill made 126 off 177 balls, an innings packed with 15 fours and a six.
