The Senate of the University of Calicut is scheduled for a meeting on Saturday (August 23, 2025) to choose his nominated for a search and selection committee selected by the new Vice -President (VC) for the institution.
Other members of the Committee are selected by Chancellor and University Commission for grants (UGC). P. Ravendran, the current VC, was appointed Chancellor in July 2024.
However, it is not yet clear who will be a candidate for the Senate. According to sources, the Indian Communist Party (Marxist) (CPI (M)), which has most of the Senate members, has to decide on the candidate. Those who were in accordance with Congress and Indian Union Muslim League, although without most, allegedly decided to design their own candidate.
However, those who were in line with the opposition block claim that the Senate, which proposes its candidate, will help a governor, who is also a Chancellor of State University, to make a search and selection committee. This, as they claim, could create a difficult situation for the state government, because it is expected that both the Chancellor’s Chancellor nominated and nominated for UGC against its interests in the current context. They also point out that if it turns out that the meeting is inconclusive, the VC may be selected according to the method proposed by the Supreme Court in the case of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and Digital University Keral. However, the members of Poled claim that what applies to the University of Technology and the Digital University may not apply here.
