The Government of West Bengal gave the land along 77 kilometers of border with Bangladesh to the border security forces (BSF) for the construction of fence and other infrastructure projects, the Ministry of the Interior (MHA) on Wednesday (Augut 2025). Land to Fence Another 229.31 km is at different stages of acquisitions, MHA said.
The Minister of the Interior of the Union AMIT Shah said in April Sabha that almost 450 km of the border with Bangladesh had not yet been fenced due to the policy of calming Trinamool.
The answer to the question Shambh Sharan Patel and Neera Shekhar, State Minister for Nityanand Rai’s home said in a written answer: “The total length of the Indo -Bangladesh border in West Bengals is 2.216.7 km, of which 1,647,696 km were still off -resident and 456.24 km.”
Awaiting acquisition
The answer added: “From 456,224 km of feasible IB length (international border) in West Bengal, land for 77,935 km, was handed over to the agency. The remaining 378.289 km is still starting with an acquisition for 148.971 km.
The answer added that the payment for 181 km was made by the center, but the state government still has to hand over the BSF land, making the agency for border fencing and infrastructure. The answer said that the handover of land along 31 km was waiting for the approval of the state cabinet.
In order to speed up land acquisition, the Indian government organizes regular meetings with the state government and timely soil acquisition payments are published, the answer said.
The Supreme Court previously reported in 2023 that the Government of West Bengal did not adopt the right to fair compensation and transparency in obtaining, rehabilitation and relocation of the Law of 2013 (Larr Act), according to which the government can take any ground needed for public purpose. The West Bengal government monitors the policy of direct purchase of land for national security projects, such as fencing borders.
The answer added that by July 31 this year, up to 723 people entering the country across the border of West Bengal, while 1,694 were detained last year.
