US-Iran News LIVE: OPEC to meet to consider oil output hike as peace talks stall amid fresh tit-for-tat strikes | Today’s news

US-Iran News LIVE: The US military said late Saturday it had shot down two Iranian attack drones threatening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the latest clash between the warring powers as tensions in West Asia escalate again.

“Earlier today, US forces in the Middle East shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones that were threatening international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz,” US Central Command said on its X account.

“US forces remain in position and ready to continue to defend against Iranian aggression.”

CENTCOM said late Friday that its forces shot down four Iranian attack drones launched toward the strait and then engaged Iran’s coastal radars.

The tit-for-tat attacks, including a salvo of Iranian missiles fired at US allies Bahrain and Kuwait on Saturday, come despite weeks of indirect talks between Washington and Tehran on how to end the war.

Meanwhile, OPEC ministers will meet on Sunday to consider higher production quotas in a bid to curb oil prices, which have risen sharply since the war effectively choked supplies in the Persian Gulf.

But even as cartel members vow to increase output by thousands of barrels a day, analysts say geopolitical realities mean they are unlikely to move the needle on prices.

With the closure of the key Strait of Hormuz since US and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February, oil prices have nearly doubled, fueling inflationary pressures around the world.
