What do you think is the biggest impact of the new law on the online game sector?
Legislation suggests the creation of a central regulatory body to oversee four key segments: esports, educational games, social games and real money playing. Among them, Real Money’s game platforms – such as poker and fantasy sports – face the biggest blow. The “bans” provisions Bill states: “No person must offer, help, affect, evoke or otherwise indulge in or engage in an online money offer and online gaming services.” It also prohibits bank and financial institutions of transaction processing for these platforms. As part of a clause of “crimes and fines”, service providers would find offering Real Money games up to three years of imprisonment or fines up to Rs 1 crore. Advertising of such platforms could also invite prison for up to two years or fines of RS 50 lakh. The government advocated this step and quoted extensive social and financial damage: “The shocking of online game games… offering monetary income against users’ deposits has led to serious social, financial, psychological and public health, especially among young individuals and economically disadvantaged groups.”Consequences for Indian sportThe cricket, which has seen an increase in the sponsorship of real games, is most affected. Dream11, an Indian team sponsor, pays approximately RS 358 Crore, while My11circle holds IPL fantasy rights worth RS 625 Crore for five years. Several leading crickets also organize personal confirmation with these companies.Sports lawyer Vidushpat Singhania noted: “The cricket is huge in India and will not have any lack of sponsors for the Indian cricket. He added that fantasy applications could move to subscription -based models, although income is likely to drop.Supports esportsFor ESports, however, the bill is considered a breakthrough. “The government’s intention to recognize and promote esports … is an encouraging step towards building a structured and globally competitive ecosystem,” said Akshat Rathee, co -founder and MD Nodwin Gaming, PTI.When Esports is preparing for its Olympic debut in 2027, the bill could provide the sector of the long-awaited legitimacy-to know a new era for playing in India.
