Four-year-old girl dies of shigellosis in Kozhikode

A four-year-old girl from Thalakkulathoor in Kozhikode district died of shigellosis at the Institute of Mother and Child Health (IMCH) wing of the Government Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning (June 6).

According to sources from the Ministry of Health, she had been treated for fever and diarrhea at the hospital since June 1. Her family members told doctors that the girl complained of restlessness on May 31 after eating the previous day. She was first taken to several private hospitals near her village and later on June 1 to the Government Hospital for Women and Children at Kottaparamba in Kozhikode. From there she was sent to IMCH. She was then in the intensive care unit. The death was recorded on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, the health officials organized chlorination of water sources in Thalakkulathoor and conducted awareness sessions.

Meanwhile, a two-year-old child from Pantheerankavu who was being treated for shigellosis at the hospital was discharged on June 2. A 10-year-old boy from Purameri is still undergoing treatment there. Both were admitted to the hospital last week in May. Their lab results on Saturday were positive for a waterborne infection.
