Lok Sabha was approved by Bill Indian Institute of Management, 2025 on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), preparing the way to create one of the leading educational institutions in Guwahati, Assam.
When moving the bill, Minister of Education of the Union Dharndra Pradhan said it would make it easier to create a second IIM in northeastern India, after Iim Shillong noted that this is a long -term demand of people in the region. For IIM Guwahati, a financial grant of 550 GBP Crore was assigned, he said.
The bill, which aims to change the Act on Indian Institutes of Management of 2017, was approved without discussion in the middle of the continuing opposition protests against a special intensive revision (Sir) of electoral roles in Bihar.
Foreign demand for iims
21 IIM, which currently operates in the country, has reached the status of the brand, said Mr. Pradhan, adding that there is a requirement for the establishment of IIM in other countries. Iim Dubai will open next month, he added.
The bill, which explained the context of demand for Iim Guwahati, noted that the Governments of the Union and Assam signed a settlement memorandum (MOS) with representatives of liberation before Assam (ULFA), which promised a comprehensive development of the state. The establishment of IIM in Guwahati, as an institution of national importance, is part of a special development package (SDP) provided by Assam, the bill said.
