Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zlensky again made subtitles in Washington, this time for his choice of clothes during a decisive meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday. The Ukrainian leader who came to the White House in an ordinary black jacket underwent applications of US officials who had previously asked whether to wear a formal suit for an oval office meeting.
The meeting of this week carried much more bets than the elections of fashion. Green, accompanied by several European leaders, came to Washington and tried to align positions with Trump’s administration in a potential peaceful frame with Russia. The Ukrainian President urged Trump to adopt the attitude of “peace through strength” and pushed to bind US security guarantees.
The interviews were followed by Trump’s significant summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Alaska, where the American leader seemed sympathetic to Moscow requirements, including the recognition of Crimea as a Russian territory and Kyiv, who left his ambitions NATO. Both points remain red lines for Ukraine.
Before entering the oval office, he boasted European counterparts, including leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Finland, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The group later joined the US President for wider discussions.
Trump, 79, signaled the mood before the conversations and described it as a “big day at the White House” in a number of contributions on his social platform of truth.
“I know exactly what I do,” he wrote. “I don’t need the advice of people who have been working on these conflicts for years and have never been able to solve them.”
One on one between Trump and Zelena was carefully monitored for stamps of tension, and many remembered the unusual scenes in February, when Trump and Vice President JD publicly cursed the Ukrainian leader during a common appearance.
