Form and future planning: Why Suryakumar Yadav was dropped as India’s T20I captain
Three months after leading India to a successful defense of the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav has lost both his captaincy and his place in the T20I squad.
The decision, announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the team unveiling for the tour of Ireland and England, marks a major shift in India’s plans for the shortest format. Shreyas Iyer was named captain as the selectors begin planning for the next T20 World Cup cycle.
Agarkar said the decision was based on a combination of Suryakumar’s recent form and the need to build a team for the future.
“For Surya, it’s difficult, he’s just won the World Cup. But as it is after most World Cups, you try and reassess what your best way forward is. Partly his own form, but also looking at another two-year cycle or a little over two years until the next World Cup, we thought that was the best way forward,” captain Shregardecaring said in a press conference.
While India retained the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar, the batsman endured a relatively quiet tournament by his standards. He scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72.
His IPL 2026 campaign has also failed to produce the numbers expected from one of the format’s leading Test batsmen. Playing for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar managed 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.
India T20 Team Selection: How It Happened
The selectors instead turned to Shreyas, who has strengthened his credentials as both a batsman and captain over the past few seasons.
“As for Shreyas, we’ve obviously seen what he’s done over the last couple of years leading different franchises. He’s won one and also made it to the final and after a great start, he’s probably had a tougher season this year. So we’ve seen everything the captain can do. His own performances have been really good. He’s been pretty close to making the World Cup squad, obviously Surygar wasn’t there either,” he said. he said.
Shreyas has not played a T20I since December 2023 and was largely kept out as India preferred a middle order with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. He was recalled as an injury replacement during the home series against New Zealand earlier this year but did not get a match.
However, his performances in the IPL have kept him firmly in contention. Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and also led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals in 2020 and 2025 respectively.
His batting returns were equally impressive. He scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 and followed it up with 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in IPL 2026.
Agarkar said these performances, combined with Shreyas’ leadership experience, made him the clear choice to take over the leadership of the party.
“In my opinion, he is an excellent candidate with enough experience who has led in the T20 format. That is obviously a different challenge.”
For voters, the decision reflects a shift in focus to the next World Cup. For Suryakumar, it marks an abrupt end to a captaincy that culminated in a World Cup title but was ultimately unable to weather concerns about the team’s form and long-term direction.
