At a joint meeting held on Tuesday in Ongol, the Association of Farmers from Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Guntur and Krish districts urged Andr Pradesh to enter and address the urgent challenges facing the aquaculture.
President of the Association of Farmers in the field of Prakasam District Shrimp Farmers Association Duggineni Gopinath stressed that the industry has been affected since former US President Donald Trump raised tariffs to imports of Indian shrimp. “Almost 40% of our exports go to the US and the increased tariff has seriously damaged our income,” he said.
Gopinath urged the State Government to provide 50% subsidy for bank loans to establish mini processing plants. He also proposed to include shrimp in food offers for social security hostels and Anganwadi centers to increase home consumption.
Farmers’ leaders demanded a minimum support price (MSP) of 470 GBP for kg for shrimp for Tiger 30 and 400 GBP per kg for 30-Count vanamei shrimp. They also sought a continuous power supply to 1.50 GBP per unit without additional fees and urged feeding companies to reduce prices by at least 15 GBP per kg.
They decided to diversify their markets, and farmers said they focused more on domestic sales and export exports to southern and European countries, rather than only the US and China.
