India T20I squad selection preview: Will Shreyas Iyer’s new era suit Sooryavanshi?

Indian cricket loves a good storyline. Just three months ago, Suryakumar Yadav led India to the famous T20 World Cup trophy. But things are changing fast and now he is out of captaincy while Shreyas Iyer takes over the team.

This shows that Indian voters are ready for tough calls. We saw this last year too when Rohit Sharma won the Champions Trophy and was quickly replaced by Shubman Gill as the ODI captain. The message of the selection committee is very clear. Past trophies no longer guarantee you a permanent place in the team.

The Future Plan begins this Saturday at the BCCI headquarters. Interestingly, Saturday is also Day 1 of the historic one-off Test match between India and Afghanistan at Mullanpur. As Shubman Gill leads the red-ball side onto the field to start the domestic season, the selectors meet quietly in the back rooms to plan a very different future for the shortest format.

With the Asian Games taking place later this year in Aichi-Nagoya, this team announcement will look very different. The Board sends the first choice to defend the gold medal, signaling a complete changing of the guard for Indian cricket.

NEW ERA UNDER CAPTAIN SHREYAS IYER

Shreyas Iyer has not played a T20I for India since December 2023 as the middle order was simply too crowded. However, his incredible captaincy record in the IPL made him impossible to ignore. Shreyas is a proven leader who won the IPL title with KKR in 2024 and has led both Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals in recent years.

He is also in great form with the bat, scoring 604 runs in IPL 2025 and 498 runs in IPL 2026 at a very high strike rate. His first big challenge as India captain will be a selection headache. He needs to find a way to put himself and Rajat Patidar in the same middle order as both are competing for the exact same slot.

WHO WILL BE SHREYAS IYER’S VICE CAPTAIN?

A new captain means India also need a young representative. The selectors want a vice-captain who can learn the ropes and lead the team long-term. They want a stable hierarchy heading into the 2028 Olympic cycle, which means this choice carries a lot of weight.

While dark horses like Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan are in the mix, Rajat Patidar has thrown his hat into the ring with utmost authority. Patidar suddenly became a massive contender after leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back IPL titles. His brilliant, calm tactical mind and his ability to handle extreme pressure mean the selectors can look to him as the perfect modern leader to grow alongside Shreyas.

IS IT TIME FOR VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI?

Everyone is wondering if Shreyas Iyer’s new team has room for the 15-year-old batting prodigy. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has just completed his first full IPL season and completely dominated the bowling attacks. He has played with such control and maturity in tough match situations that the selectors believe he is ready for international cricket.

Baby numbers from IPL 2026 are absolutely absurd. He won the Orange Cap and broke records by smashing 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a staggering strike rate of 237.31. He even broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of clearing the boundary 72 times in a single season. The only problem is that India’s top order is already full, meaning the selectors may rotate opening batsmen in Ireland and England to give youngster Sooryavanshi a big chance to shine.

WILL SHUBMAN GILL RETURN AFTER IPL HEROICS?

Shubman Gill recently saw India’s T20I team shut the door on him in heartbreaking fashion. Despite being touted as a future leader across formats, has been completely dropped from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, watched from the sidelines as the team lifted the trophy in March. The selectors chose to focus on different combinations, leaving the young opener with a massive point to prove. From that painful omission, Gill made a roaring comeback in the format during IPL 2026. He led Gujarat Titans from the front and finished as the second highest run-getter in the tournament, amassing 732 runs in 16 matches at an average of 45.75 and a destructive strike rate of 163.02. His spectacular arc of redemption included a breathtaking 53-ball 104 in Qualifier 2, which made it impossible for the selection committee to keep him out of the T20Is for longer.

WHAT WILL THE INDIAN BOWLING ATTACK LOOK LIKE?

India have plenty of batsmen, but an all-round spot in the fast bowling remains a big problem. Hardik Pandya once again struggled with back spasms during the IPLwhich raised a lot of questions about his fitness and impact. The selectors still want him for the ODI format ahead of the 2027 World Cup, but they need to test whether his body can handle bowling a full quota of ten, meaning young all-rounders like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube are likely to handle the all-round duties in the UK.

We could also see very well and T20I debut for Lucknow Super Giants pacer Prince Yadav. The young speedster has impressed in his IPL 2026, taking 16 wickets in 14 matches at an economy rate of 8.83. After sealing the first ODI call-up for the Afghanistan series on the back of those performances, he looks set for a move into the T20I squad as well.

MAJOR SNUBS FT AXAR, SURYAKUMAR?

The hardest part of this new era is seeing big names fall despite recent success. Suryakumar Yadav led India in a prolific run but his individual form has dipped terribly. He scored just 242 runs in the World Cup and followed it up with a miserable IPL, averaging just 20.76 with 270 runs in 13 innings. At 35, selectors feel his trajectory won’t last until the 2028 Olympics, so they’re making a ruthless transition.

By Surya’s side, even instead of him World T20 vice-captain Axar Patel may be under serious threat. Axar has had a very memorable outing with both bat and ball as well as a tough stint leading Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026 where he managed just 8 wickets in 14 games at an expensive economy rate of over 8.5 and scored just 165 runs. Selectors are focusing entirely on younger players with higher intent, meaning the days of older picks are officially over.
